Addisons Disease

Adrenal cortex hormone is a life important hormone, which helps the body to resist stress. Healthy people produce hormone equivalent to 20-30 mg hydrocortison every 24 hours. Most patients are fine with 20 mg hydrocortison in the morning and 10 mg at night.

If you become ill – especially with an infection – and your suprarenal gland function is reduced, it is important that the the body is given added hydrocortison.

The most common symptoms of a low level of the hormone are:
1        dizziness
2        stomach ache
3        diarea
4        nausea
5        head ache
6        tiredness

The symptoms will increase if the hormone is not injected or provided. If this does not happen the symptoms can be
1        blackening of the eyes
2        severe vomiting
3        low blood pressure
4        unconsciousness (Addison crisis).

What to do:

If the temparature rises immediately increase the dose of hydrocortison. If the temperature rises to 38 degrees Celsius, the dose is tripled, and at 39 degrees C increased to five times the normal dose.
Keep increasing as long as there is fever, and then lower the dose over 4-5 days.

If there is vomiting, the hormone must be injected via veins.

If the disease is untreated it can be lethal.

Important: All kind of infections must be treated instantly.
